Back to the USA exhibition marks 30 years of Irwin

Irwin exhibition at ŠKUC Gallery, Ljubljana

Irwin is marking its 30th anniversary with the repetition of the group's first gallery exhibition, Back to the USA.

At the original exhibition Back to the USA(1984) in Gallery ŠKUC Irwin presented reconstructions of paintings, photographies and installations of American artists, selected from the works that were represented at the exhibition with the same name, travelling in 1983/84 accross the western european countries. Irwin's version of the Back to the USA exhibition did not only appropriate the selected artworks but also - through the duplication of the exhibition – appropriated the overview over what was presented as representative for the American art in the then Western Europe and also the decision over where it will be exhibited. Because little has been written about the exhibition and because, since the establishment of the term re-enactment in contemporary art in the last decade, it has come to be considered an early example of re-enactment, we decided to present the exhibition to the Slovenian public again. The exhibition is presented in the same space, but reduced in scope, as the majority of works were meant to be used only once and made from the cheapest materials and paper. Only half of the works from the original exhibition thirty years ago are on display: those which were preserved or which could be mechanically reproduced.

Project Back to the USA consisted of reconstructions of works by: Nicholas Africano, John Ahearn, Jonathan Borofsky, Richard Bosman, Neil Jenney, Robert Kushner, Matt Mullican, Cindy Sherman, William Wegman. Project was realised by R IRWIN S : Mare Kovačič, Dušan Mandič, Andrej Savski, Bojan Štokelj, Roman Uranjek and Borut Vogelnik.
